PRESS RELEASES

ICT sector in Zimbabwe

1. The prevailing economic environment has not spared the ICT sector in Zimbabwe. This is particularly so because the sector in import driven, the majority of players being distributors of imported hardware and software solutions from major international ICT players.

To this end, the industry is very fragmented and driven by fundamentals that are to a larger extent, beyond the control of local businesses.

2. Most of the local ICT companies are still a long way from listing on the local bourse. Like indicated before, a lot of the industry players are box pushers, with little or no scope for adding value in their proposition to the market.

In addition, issues like corporate governance still need close attention in the industry.

Africom has made significant progress in addressing some the issues highlighted above. Africom has built significant capacity on the ground through the deployment of its public data network. Listing is definitely an option to fund the further expansion of the data network and it is one strategy that is certainly being considered by the team.

3. Beyond the information in the public domain, we have no further information on the relocation of Microsoft.

4. Africom is looking to achieve the following in the coming year:

  • Expansion of the network to ensure availability data connectivity services, particularly in the metropolitan areas of Harare, Bulawayo and the other major cities.
  • Spearheading an educational campaign on ICT. As an industry and as a nation, we are still to g.html the potential that ICT has to transform our lives. To this end, Africom, as a leader in the field, will be embarking on several programs to enlighten and bring an understanding of ICT and its fundamentals. This is particularly so with regard ICT policy formulation and implementation, as well as driving economic renewal in business. Tourism and education are some of the sectors that Africom, through ICT, would like to see redefined .
