Africom leads in information communication technology
Africom has established itself as a leading expert in information
communication technology. Its ability to provide data communications
networking solutions anywhere in the country has resulted
in both the private and public sector making use of its expertise.
Eight years after its formation, Africom is well known for
its expertise in establishing point?to?point data telecommunications
links and as the first and only private company to have established
a public data telecommunications network.
It has shown determination in providing information communication
technology (ICT) solutions for even the most difficult scenarios.
In 1997 it established a link between Harare and Murewa which
at that time was the longest wireless- bridged network in
the world.
It has provided links for private companies and government
departments to areas where there are no public telecommunications
links or where existing telecommunications infrastructure
is inadequate.
Africom sees information technology as vital for economic
growth, particularly in a society where many companies, banks
and building societies have integrated information technology
into their day?to-day business operations.
It considers its provision of data telecommunications links
as an important contribution to national development. It.htmlires
to make this contribution not only in Zimbabwe but in other
African countries too.
Although Africoms focus is on data communications,
voice, data and video can nowadays be transmitted through
a single communication platform Telecommunications networks
can transmit broadcast services. Audio and visual information
can be transmitted electronically. As a result, Africoms
expertise has extended beyond purely data communication.
While it has become involved in increasingly large projects
for government and major corporations, Africom has also made
life easier for smaller companies through a computer networking
service for small offices and home computers dubbed AfriExpress.
AfriExpress provides a fast computer networking service for
those who only want a few computers networked or a few additional
network points added to an existing network.
One of Africoms major projects has been the provision
of networking solutions for the Public Finance Management
System (PFMS) to link ministries and departments with their
provincial offices and Central Computing Services.
Last year Africom began to build its own public data network,
with a combination of fibre-optic cables and wireless base
stations. Africoms public network service is available
in most of Harare. Work has begun on establishing a network
in Bulawayo, which will be linked to the Harare network. Eventually
Africom intends to have a network that will encompass the
whole of the country.
As its operations grow, so does Africoms expertise.
It is now recognised as one of the leading experts in its
field not only in Zimbabwe but in the region.
