Africoms data telecommunications network commercialises
Africom has successfully installed the infrastructure for
its public data telecommunications network in Harare and data
service is already available in the city.
Officials from the Posts and Telecommunications Regulatory
Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) visited Africoms Eastlea
premises last month and inspected the equipment that Africom
has installed at various sites around the city.
The authoritys main mission was to confirm that
Africom had complied with the various provisions of its licence
and they were pleased with what we have done, explained
Africom Corporate Communications Officer, Nobesuthu Nduku.
The network, which is the first such privately, owned and
operated public network in the country, allows subscribers
to have access to high speed data transmission platforms.
The Africom network allows the transmission of computer data
from one physical location to another, through fibre optic
cables and broadband wireless channels, for such applications
such as internet access, file transfers and financial applications
such Point of Sale and ATM transactions.
Over the past few weeks Africoms engineers have been
installing switches, which link up the network infrastructure.
Earlier in the year the company carried out the necessary
civil works and laid optic fibre cables in the city centre.
Mrs. Nduku indicated that service is already available in
the city centre, Graniteside, Southerton, Kopje, Borrowdale
and Avondale. Newlands and Msasa will be set alight before
year end..
Work is already underway to increase network coverage to the
rest of Harare and Bulawayo.
Our customers are really delighted by the progress
that we have made. Feedback has been very positive Mrs
Nduku said. The competition introduced in the market by Africom
to the incumbent telecommunications operator allows customers
more choice and value.
Africom sees the development of its network as an important
contribution to national development and a critical factor
the stimulation of the economy. A good data communication
infrastructure is critical to any business today and Africom
is delivering this.
