Africom provides banks with networking and on-line links
Modern retail banks and building societies depend on networked
computers, automated teller machines and online transactions
for the efficiency of their customer service and the speed
of transactions.
Africom has provided the communication links for a number
of banks and financial institutions, providing local area
networks to link computers within branches and wide area networks
to link branches and automated teller machines (ATMs).
Africom initially relied on point-to-point communications
to link ATMs and Branches. Financial institutions had to purchase
their own equipment for this.
Now however it has a public network in Harare and the beginnings
of one in Bulawayo. It has invested in base stations and the
installation of fibre optic cables in these cities in order
to provide a public data network that enables banks and other
companies to link their branches without having to invest
in their own infrastructure to do this.
Since the establishment of its network, Africom has been
busy assisting banks and other companies and institutions
to take advantage of this network and switch to it. This enables
those that were using unlicensed radio links to comply with
the latest legislation and regulations of the posts and telecommunications
Regulatory Authority.
The network is secure and reliable and allows the high-speed
transmission of data and connection to the Internet. The state
of he network is monitored at Africom headquarters and any
problems with it quickly resolved, often before customers
become aware of them.
There is a fixed monthly charge no matter how much use is
made of the network. The system allows 24-hour on-line connection
at no additional charge.
Where links with branches outside Harare and Bulawayo are
concerned Africom, which has its own licensed bandwidth,
can still provide point-to-point wide area network solutions.
At one time it held the world record for the longest wireless-bridged
network, when it linked a company in Harare with its
deport in Murehwa.
It has considerable experience of providing links with some
of the most distant parts of the country.
Without online data communications and ATM networks banks
and building societies would be unable to provide the service
that their customers come to expect of them. Banking halls
would be crowded and service would be slow.
Africom has achieved a reputation for its expertise in providing
communications links for banks and other financial institutions.
It is a reputation it is proud of and one that it is determined
to maintain and live up to.
