AFRITELL FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1.Who owns Afritell? Afritell is owned by Powertel, Transmedia and Africom.
2. Who are these companies? Powertel is a subsidiary of the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply
Authority. It operates a data network. It has installed fibre
optic cables all over the country, following in the path of
Zesa's electricity transmission lines.
Africom is privately owned company which also has its own
public data network. The network utilises a combination of
fibre optic cables, wireless broadband technology as well a
satellite system and has an extensive presence in Zimbabwe.
Transmedia is the national broadcasting signals carrier.
It owns the infrastructure used by the country to transmit
radio and television signals.
3. What is the business of Afritell? Afritell intends to offer fixed line voice telephony services
in Zimbabwe.
4.Why the partnership? Each of these three companies has extra capacity on their
networks. This partnership is a way of harnessing this idle
capacity to benefit the average Zimbabwean who does not have
access to voice telephony services while at the same time,
creating value for each of the shareholders.
5. Have
these companies merged? No. There is no a merger of the existing operations, but
rather Afritell is a new and separate investment altogether
which is independent of all three companies' current operations.
6.What is the benefit for each participating company? Each company will gain revenue from leasing its excess capacity
to Afritell. In addition, at shareholder level, these companies
will be entitled to dividend if and when it is declared.
7.How will this business be financed? Afritell has its own books of accounts and will source funding
for its operations from financiers, both local and foreign.
8.Does
Afritell have a licence to offer services? Afritell has submitted its application for a licence to the
Postal and Telecommunication Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe
(Potraz).
